For many, mental health issues are real monsters, and Toby Allen has given them a look and feel that we all can understand.

Mental health is something that so many people deal with on a daily basis, including myself, and struggle with constantly. It is like having hidden demons that only you can really see, but thanks to illustrator Toby Allen, the demons are visible to everyone. When speaking on the intentions of his work, Allen said “I want to make people aware of how damaging these illnesses are and how much of a burden they can be to those who suffer from them. The project highlights conditions that some people may have never even heard of, so the work aims to raise awareness for these.”

For me, it’s like looking at the monsters of an RPG, but it is not role-playing but real life. Plus the artwork itself is stunning, so without further ado, here are the first set of Real Monsters.

So much attention has been given to this, which really brings me joy because mental health is not to be ignored or downsized, and we should be willing to discuss the issues, even in creative formats because creativity is relief for so many. And there are more monsters to come from Allen in the future.
