When people talk about scary games, it usually is about video games and jump scares. But I would rather play some spooky board games than get endlessly jump scared. So I have curated a few spooky games that are great for the table.
Betrayal at House on the Hill
This game is probably the spookiest on the list. You and your crew will enter a haunted house and explore, collecting items and discovering new areas. But be careful, because when someone triggers the Haunt face, all hell breaks loose and someone on your team becomes your enemy. Maybe it’s vampires, maybe it’s demons, and maybe dragons. You won’t know until you enter the house on the hill.
Gloom
This game is all about death through story-telling. Tell the unfortunate tale of your family until their demise, but be careful because your opponents might try to lighten the mood and your point total.

Dead of Winter
Although it isn’t quite winter yet, this zombie game will make you paranoid. You play as a team, but someone may be working against you. Paranoia ensues as the zombies flood your settlement and you fight off frostbite. If you want more drama and tense gameplay, Dead of Winter is the game.
One Night Ultimate Werewolf
If zombies aren’t your thing, maybe you want to be a werewolf. In One Night Ultimate Werewolf, everyone gets a different role to play. Maybe you will be a werewolf and kill off everyone night by night, or maybe you are a P.I. and can investigate people at night. Either way, this game is full of wild accusations and paranoia as you try to survive.
This game can also be played with just playing card. Read more on that at my Games That Only Need A Deck of Cards post.
Dread
If you want to roleplay, Dread is a great horror RPG where your fate is based on a pull from a tower instead of dice roles. It’s specifically for horror and will be scary, so if you’ve ever wanted to feel like you were in a horror movie, this one is for you.
What are your favorite games that go bump in the night? Let me know with a comment below.
I’ve seen some of these games at Barnes and Noble before! I’d love to get a group together for a Halloween game night.
We love playing Ultimate Werewolf! Our last Halloween before graduating, our University played it for the Halloween party. It was awesome playing with so many people!
I haven’t played Betrayal at House on the Hill yet, great suggestion for Halloween! I love Dead of Winter, too but I’m sure my game group would like to try a new spooky game!
They are similar games so I bet they’d enjoy Betrayal!
I have played Betrayal at House on the Hill several times and I love it. Dread sounds awesome. Where is the best place to find the book to play?
