As I was spending way more time than I should have looking at games on sale through Humble Bundle, I saw that this game, The Flame in the Flood, was being offered for free and was having a free weekend. Although I don’t play a lot of survival games, I decided to give it a try.
In The Flame in the Flood, you are going on a rogue-lite river journey through the backwaters of a forgotten post-societal America. You and your loyal companion are rafting through a flooded landscape going island to island to collect supplies, craft needed items, and fend off predators. You also have missions to complete, whether it be campaign missions or side tasks. These tasks range from finding a radio signal to acquiring particular gear.
I have to admit I didn’t make it very far in the game. Mainly because I learned that I am not very good at survival games and that this game was particularly challenging for me as a new player of the genre. I played a little bit of both the campaign and the open world game types and died in both in about 30 minutes each. Part of that was my lack of knowing what to do and also because this game is harder than it lets on.
I wish I could have explored more in the game and seen more of it, but unfortunately, my survival abilities aren’t very good. Based on the gameplay trailers, it also seems like you can meet other survivors that will be important on your journey and a whole zoo worth of animals as well. This game definitely has a lot more to it then I could cover in a first look.
If you enjoy survival games where you need to manage your resources and craft to survive, you should give The Flame in the Flood a try. It is available on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Steam.
