Hues and Cues is a vibrant board game from The Op where you try and pinpoint what color is being described with one and two-word clues. Let’s take a closer look at this colorful game.

In Hues and Cues, every player will play as a cue giver. They draw a card that has four color options with their matching coordinate on the board. They will choose one of those colors and provide a one-word clue for it. The goal is to get the other players as close to the correct color as possible. The guessing players place one of their pieces on the color they chose, with only one piece per square. After the first guessing round, the cue giver can give a second cue of two-words. Players will make a second guess and once that is done, the cue giver will reveal the correct color by placing the point-indicator square with the chosen color in the center. Guessers get two points if they are within the square and one point if immediately next to it. If any player is in the exact center, they get three points. The cue giver earns one point for every other player inside the square. The player with the most points after everyone has given clues twice wins.

The game is quite easy to pick up and start playing, both the setup and the actual mechanics of playing. The most difficult part of the game is thinking of the clues since you are restricted by word count and a few other rules (can’t reference anything in the room, can’t use basic color names like blue or red, etc.). It sounds very challenging but I wouldn’t say that it is that difficult. It may take you a couple of minutes to think of the best word(s) to use, but since you are given four color options to start you can choose to not go with a particularly difficult color. Guessing colors is easy, just takes a little thought as you try to decipher what color the cue giver is trying to get you to pick.

Overall I enjoyed playing Hues and Cues. It is a very chill game that doesn’t feel super competitive despite the fact you are competing for points. It won’t be the most exciting game to take to the table, but if you are looking for a casual and relaxed board game to play, Hues and Cues is a great option.
You can find Hues and Cues at your local game store or online.
