What To Watch: Life is Strange

So I am that person who watches other people play video games, and never play them myself. Yeah, it’s strange, but life is strange (heh get it?). Anyway, one of my recent games I watched through is Life is Strange, a game that focuses on a teenager who can control time and must save her classmates and friends from death and destruction.

Max Caulfield is a high school student at Blackwell Academy, a private school in Arcadia Bay, Oregon. She realizes she has the power to rewind time when she sees a her best friend, Chloe, get shot. Her power gets more use while Blackwell becomes a place of drugs, death, and mystery, and a storm starts to brew over Arcadia Bay.

The reason I enjoyed watching the game is because the story is actually pretty complex and has unexpected twists and turns. The graphics of the Pacific Northwest are beautiful, and the soundtrack is good. It’s also interesting to watch how time travel can aid Max, or hurt her greatly.

The relationships in the game are compelling, whether it’s with long time best friend Chloe, Warren the forever friend zoned guy, or the Vortex Club. It’s all a mystery, and just when you think you figured out who the killer is, you get a surprise.

Certainly, you can play the game yourself and get the experience of figuring it all out. I’m not a video gamer, so just watch the play through. I watched PewDiePie’s, because he is relatively quiet so it’s easier to hear the dialogue, and all 5 episodes are up already so you don’t have to wait forever to see it.

What is your favorite video game to watch or play? Leave me a comment letting me know!

  1. Thanks for posting this. I’ve had my eye on Life Is Strange. It’s on my to be played list, was considering the digital copy for PS4 but the physical copy on Amazon comes with a beautiful art concept book.

Would you say this game is a bit like the film The Butterfly Effect starring Ashton Kutcher? That’s the vibe I get. I don’t want to watch any gameplay until I have played it myself, but Pewds is always a good option. Bro fist! Ha.

That’s so interesting and cool that you aren’t a gamer but you enjoy watching gameplay. 🙂

  2. I watched Jack Septiceye play this! Loved the concept but I felt like the ending was a bit of a let down- no matter which way you went. Like…the choices changed how you experienced the game but had absolutely no impact on the endings you got. Which I get was the point- that some things you can’t escape- but still. Was meh for me. As a whole though it is a super cool interesting game.

I recently played Oxenfree and it is fabulous if you like these choice based games!

As far as watching I watch Markiplier and JackSepticEye literally every night. I watch Game Grumps whenever theres a new mario maker video haha.

  3. Sadly, there are a lot of things I take issue with in the game which makes me refuse to play it. I do enjoy point and click games like this one, however. Many of my favorite games are from BioWare such as Dragon Age, Mass Effect and Jade Empire. I’ve been on a Assassin’s Creed kick and pretty much Telltale can have my money after…they release all the episodes of a game.

      • Honestly, outside of a blog post my issues are too big for a comment. But one of my biggest issues is the episodic game play. I won’t even purchase a game until all the DLC or episodes have been released. I sat on Dragon Age: Inquisition for a year because I wanted to have all the DLC before I dived in.

  4. Awww, this game looks good! I also like more watching other people play games than playing them myself (unless it’s a game that I might really love). For some reason I’m picky. But this one looks like a good one for me 😀

  5. I do the same thing and always get made fun of. I love watching others play and enjoy the video game story-I just am terrible at playing. Glad to know others are out there like me!

  6. That’s what Let’s Plays are for right? That being said, I did play this game and HOLY CRAP FEELS. Did you feel this way too?? I was actually pretty upset with the ending because…well, I don’t want to spoil anything on this comment thread but I’ve been dying to talk to someone about this game 🙂

  7. I am also an avid video game water. Most video games are too difficult for me (it’s the two joystick business and my lack of hand eye coordination). I really enjoyed this video game and even played it myself. I like action/consequence decision based games and this was my first dive into them. It was fun but because I’m a photographer, I feel a little biased. The characters were excellent, scenery beautiful, and I loved all the pop culture references.

  8. I played through Life is Strange and really enjoyed it, but I’m very tempted to watch others play it to see if they made different choices and what those outcomes were.

  9. Life is Strange wasn’t perfect, but I still loved it so much. Stumbled over it when browsing vids uploaded by Yogscast KIM and nearly didn’t watch it because it didn’t look like it would appeal to me, but decided to give it a go, expceting to lose interest after 10-15 minutes or so. Gods, was I wrong. Watched the whole first episode and then went right to Steam and bought the full game. I was full of anticipation before every single episode, and several moments had me fighting back tears. Other moments left me awake in bed at night, agonising over my choices and dreading the consequences.
