Favorite Strong Female Characters in Video Games

Video games for so long have been stereotyped as a boy’s world. However, there have been many badass female characters coming out, making it more of a woman’s place after all. But which strong female characters top my list?

Lara Croft (Tomb Raider)

Lara Croft has been the leading badass lady of video games for years, and now with the reboot and origin story games coming in the recent years, we get to see her become the awesome, tough, tomb raider she is. The recent games are really amazing and totally worth playing for Lara’s skill alone, but also have great stories that show us where she came from and why she is the way she is.

Ellie (The Last of Us)

Ellie is just a child, but a surprisingly strong and independent one. In the post apocalyptic future during a zombie plague, Ellie is the only one who can save the world. During some of her playable parts, she has to be the savior and hero of her escort Joel. She has a profound understanding that she is powerful and can be a saving grace, and is willing to sacrifice herself for humanity.

Play The Last of Us – PlayStation 3

Evie Frye (Assassins Creed Syndicate)

Evie is the first female character that is entirely playable in Assassins Creed universe. Not only is she an assassin, but she fights for the good of her city and the people. She is very stoic and guided by honor, but is deadly too. Whether it is a hidden blade or a cane sword, Evie is one strong lady.

Amanda Ripley (Alien Isolation)

Based on the Alien film franchise, Alien Isolation follows Amanda Ripley (yes, that Ripley), who goes into space with a mission of figuring out what happened to her mother. That plan goes to hell when she gets trapped on a ship with the alien, and is fighting to stay alive while everyone around her dies. If she is not a strong, badass woman, no one is.

Commander Shepard (Mass Effect)

Commander Shepard can be played as both male and female, but the female version is way better. She is the embodiment of women can do anything men can. She is the strong leader in the game, and is definitely a force to be reckoned with.

Plus, the ladies that you mentioned! Also, female characters on MMORPGs. I love the ladies I’ve made. Obviously, only my family and friends know about them. They aren’t famous characters. But, I still love them.

  3. Excellent article, I agree with them all! I will always have such a special place in my heart for Fem Shep – I feel like being able to play the same game just with a different gendered character was such a new thing at the time, and it was SO welcome. The Tomb Raider games were some of the first I ever really got into as well, so Lara Croft is up there on my list too!

  4. YES! There are so many strong females in video games, and I hope the number keeps going up. Of course Lara is amazing and I love the list you put together. Faith from Mirror’s Edge is also one of my favorites!
