Spooky (Not Horror) Video Games for Halloween

Sometimes we want to get spooky with our games during this season, but full-on horror is too intense. If you are one of these people, I have some suggestions for video games you can play with just enough spook but not horror.

Luigi’s Mansion 3

If you want to stay closer to friendly and calming games, Luigi’s Mansion 3 is a good choice. Mario has gone missing, the hotel is haunted, and Luigi will have to explore it to find his brother. It has it’s spooky qualities while still be comfortably in the Mario universe.

Gone Home

Gone Home is an eerie and atmospheric exploration game where your character has just come home from a year abroad on a rainy night to a mysteriously empty house. You’ll have to explore the house alone to solve what is wrong and why your family is missing.

Night in the Woods

While Night in the Woods is praised as a mental health commentary game, it does have it’s creepy moments. Throughout the game is the mystery of why a child has gone missing and the mysterious figures that are following Mae around. From creepy trips to a graveyard to being stalked by shadow figure, this game is full of eerie moments that will spook you.

Don’t let the cute art style fool you, ITTA,  a bullet-hell, boss-rush style adventure, is full of creepy monsters and atmospheric gloom. Locked away from a seemingly peaceful world are powerful creatures that you must fight to find true peace.

Little Misfortune

Another one where the art shouldn’t fool you, Little Misfortune experiences much of her namesake as she goes on an adventure playing the game of Mr. Voice. It’s unique humor and compelling mystery make it an especially creepy game perfect for this season.

The Mooseman

If games like Inside and Limbo are of interest to you, take a look at The Mooseman. You play as the Mooseman and you have the ability to see all that is hidden to the mortal eye. You are about to visit three layers of this universe – the first one is the Lower World where the spirits of the dead reside. Explore Slavic folklore in this ethereally eerie game.

  2. I should preface this by saying that I’m an absolute baby when it comes to scary things, but Gone Home had me in full goosebumps when I played! There’s just something about exploring that house by yourself… GAH!
