aespa has come back with their third mini album “MY WORLD” and with its release comes my quick takes.
Welcome To MY World ft. naevis
This song isn’t what I expected, but it is more aespa-esque than what I had expected. I wish it had more climax or energy at some point because it is rather monotonous otherwise.
Spicy
This is not a good title track and would have been better left as a B-side or off the album, to be honest. I’m really not a fan and I don’t think it’s a good song at all.
Salty & Sweet
It gives me Pussycat Dolls vibes, which is very early 2000s and thus the current trend in K-Pop. The song on the first listen is okay, but I have a feeling that with more listens I’ll end up liking it more.
Thirsty
I feel like I have heard this song before, which is not something I particularly enjoy. If a song sounds similar to other songs from other artists, it better be a damn good version of that for me to like it. This was simply fine and forgettable.
I’m Unhappy
I saw someone say this has a Red Velvet style, and that is a good way to describe it. It’s also the song I like the most on the album because it is the most interesting sounding. Even with a Red Velvet style, I can’t see Red Velvet doing it which is a good thing. It has a uniquely-for-aespa vibe, unlike most other songs on the album.
‘Til We Meet Again
I don’t have an affinity for ballads to begin with, but I will say that this is a pleasant listen and better than most of the album. Oddly enough this is probably the one song I wouldn’t mind hearing again.
Album Overall
Overall, I’m not a fan of this album. Most of the tracks sound like they weren’t written for aespa and just passed down as rejects from other groups. This album lost the edge that the rest of aespa’s discography has, and while I respect trying new sounds and styles, most of those attempts failed in my opinion. And I think a lot of my disliking is caused by Spicy which subsequently sullied my opinion of the whole album.
