I find that creatives are notorious workaholics. We have a lot of ideas that we want to pursue and are constantly working, even when we are technically not. So we need self-care, and we need the reminder to do it because we will keep working otherwise. These are some self-care tips especially for us creatives.
Stop Working And Step Away from Device
I know that we would keep working without any breaks if we could, but we really shouldn’t. Just stop and step away from your work completely. It’s not going anywhere and you get a break, like to eat and take care of yourself and sleep. The longer you sit in front of your computer and working, the more burnt out you will get. I have also found that stepping away from something for a bit can give me fresh perspective when I return, which leads to some great work.
I like to destress by taking in what others create, especially those that create things different than I do. It’s refreshing to look at someone else’s work and not your own for a bit. So read a book, watch a movie or some YouTube, and take yourself out of your own work for a moment.
Listen to Your Body
If you’re hungry, go eat. If you’re exhausted, go to sleep. We tend to get so wrapped up in our work that we forget to do the simple tasks that keep us alive. Listen to your body, because it wants to take care of you.
Manage Your Time
Keeping a schedule and having good time management skills are essential for creatives. We tend to follow our own schedules and make our own deadlines and workflows, so setting a personal schedule, knowing when to start and stop work and get things done, will greatly benefit your mental health.
